PUBLIC VIEWING WELCOMED

Baseresult Holdings Ltd welcomes Cornwall County Council’s announcement that the company’s submission for new up-to-date planning conditions at South Crofty Mine are now on public display.

Baseresult made the submission in March 2003 but several requests from the Council for further information have led to a long delay in the planning conditions being determined. The Review of Mineral Planning Permissions (ROMPs) is required under legislation in the 1995 Environment Act – even though the existing mining permissions at South Crofty will not lapse until 2042.  The ROMPs application was accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment.

‘We are delighted that we are now a major step further forward with our ROMPs submission,’ said Kevin Williams, Managing Director of Baseresult Holdings Ltd.  ‘Carrying out the review has been a very labour-intensive and time-consuming process.  We could probably fill two rooms with the amount of paperwork generated.  Now the public has an opportunity to see how the mine will be operated with modern environmental controls. We look forward to receiving the Council’s determination by the end of this year.’

Despite the enormous amount of work that it has taken to complete the ROMPs and the Environmental Impact Assessment, Baseresult has continued to prepare South Crofty for a full return to mining. Seventeen people are currently employed by the company and that number will increase to 200 when full tin production resumes.

‘We have always said that we are committed to mining at South Crofty and our position hasn’t changed,’ said Mr Williams.  ‘Cornwall has a rich mining past and, as far as Baseresult is concerned, it will have a rich mining future.’
