OPEN DAY SUCCESS
The Open Day held at South Crofty tin mine in Camborne on Saturday 6 March has been declared a huge success.
More than 500 people visited the mine on the sixth anniversary of its closure to see the plans that Baseresult Holdings Limited have for its future and to talk to company staff. Over 100 people took an underground tour and a similar number looked around the surface area.
'We are absolutely delighted that so many people came,' said Kevin Williams, Managing Director of Baseresult. 'The event was supposed to start at 10am but our first visitors arrived at 9.30 and we then had a constant throng of people until we closed at 4pm.
'We'd like to thank everyone for being very positive and supportive of our plans to re-start the mine within the next two years and to re-generate the surface area with a mixed housing, leisure, commercial and tourism development. I felt there was a genuine desire to see Baseresult - as a local company working with local partners - succeed.'
An outline planning application for the South Crofty site has been submitted to Kerrier District Council. If approved, regeneration of 27 acres of the surface area would get underway within one year. All the mine activities would be transferred underground with the mine's offices, services and support area moved to the 6 acre Tuckingmill Decline - at the back of South Crofty - and, within two years, about 200 miners would once again be mining for tin in Camborne.
